March 3, 1991 - 20 years ago this month - Rodney King’s beating by LAPD officers was caught on videotape by bystander George Holliday on his VHS camcorder.

The footage captured the attention of media outlets around the world and turned what would have otherwise been another forgotten incidence of police brutality into a public demand for transparency and accountability from their government and law enforcement officials.

The power of amateur video recording is still changing the way citizens and police interact. Today, handheld digital recording technology allows people to document their own treatment and is increasingly used to dispute falsified police reports.
